Optimise Noise Planning for Mine Sites

Fast and Comprehensive Risk Assessment – Maximising Operational Windows

It is widely known that comprehensive and accurate risk assessment before a project begins can mean the difference between days, weeks or even entire operations lost, not to mention the unexpected financial impacts. On the other side of the coin, sometimes time and financial pressure from stakeholders can constrain the amount of time operators are offered to complete this critical process. For one of Australia’s leading bauxite mines, Vanguard’s Nexus was able to deliver unrivalled foresight and critical insights into potential noise issues during their 10 year planning process.

Accurately Mapping Noise Risk – Before It Becomes an Expensive Reality

Our client’s future mine had over 250 pits and haul roads with an intricate transport and logistics system to be maintained – it was critical that any constraints to the long term plan were identified and minimised so that the operational window could be maximised and maintained at optimal levels. Operations included both day and night activities, meaning it was critical that Nexus delivered accurate results so that noise risks could be mitigated.

Back to the Future

Using Nexus they were able to model, and analyse over 16,400 scenarios using 3 years of historical meteorological data, in order to predict the noise risks of the mine in the future. Nexus took into consideration a range of variables such as:

  • Day vs Night operations
  • Meteorological conditions
  • Pits, haul roads and topography
  • Mine Plan

These variables, combined with the meteorological data, enabled our client to generate noise risk maps and data that were used to mitigate risk and understand constraints for each month of the year in a matter of hours.

Nexus is the next step in the process of returning to optimal operations

We’ve said it before but it bears repeating for the sake of preserving and growing the critical numbers that make up the bottom line – Nexus was developed and set up to gather, record and present facts in a format that is:

1. Easy to collect
2. Easy to collate
3. Simple to interpret

Ready-to-Action Risk Classification Outputs

Thanks to Nexus, our client was able to gain valuable insights about potential noise risk to threshold levels . The rich and detailed data provided, also enabled them to separate the different pits into high, medium and low risk for both day and night time activities.

  • High – 80 to 100 % likelihood over the whole year of not being able to mine in that pit without exceeding the threshold level at a receiver.
  • Medium – 20 to 80 % likelihood over the whole year of not being able to mine in that pit without exceeding the threshold level at a receiver.
  • Low – 0 to 20 % likelihood over the whole year of not being able to mine in that pit without exceeding the threshold level at a receiver.

This information can be transferred to risk maps, for immediate use , plotting high to low risk areas across both day and night operations.

The Benefits of Nexus Technology

In this case, the Nexus system was able to accurately and efficiently deliver insights that ensured planning for all mine operations in the future would be fully equipped to mitigate the impact of exceeding noise thresholds on client operations – 24-7.
